When the avalanche stopped, the young man was on the surface of the snow and was not buried, police said. But he was injured and rescued by a police helicopter.

The 21-year-old was part of a four-person group of mountain rescuer friends. They started from the Rendl ski area to the Darmstädter Hütte and continued towards the eastern gorge of the Scheibler.

From there the group then drove north. The 21-year-old released the snowboard himself after just a few turns. His three friends were not caught by the avalanche. They alerted the rescue workers and ultimately drove themselves into the valley.
