The poll showed the attitude of Belarusians towards Russia

More than 76% of the citizens of Belarus consider relations with Russia to be friendly or normal, follows from the sociological survey “Belarus: Opinion about the Future”. The poll was conducted by the Institute of Sociology of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus in conjunction with the EcooM Analytical Center, its results are reported on December 16 by the BelTA agency.

Thus, 41% of respondents consider friendly and fraternal relations between the countries as normal and calm – 35.5%. Relationships were called tense by 3.7% of the respondents, another 12.9% found it difficult to answer this question.

The survey participants were also asked to answer questions about the Union State of Belarus and Russia. Thus, 40.8% of the respondents were in favor of “the equal presence of countries in the structure of the Union State.” At the same time, 24.2% of respondents indicated that there is no need to unite the two states, noting the importance of developing “good multi-vector relations with other states.” The desire to unite the two countries into one was expressed by 6.4% of the survey participants.

A total of 10,217 citizens took part in the survey; the study was conducted from November 15 to December 4, 2021.

On November 4, a meeting of the Supreme State Council of the Union State was held. Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko discussed issues of further bilateral cooperation, and also signed an integration decree approving 28 union programs. This document, according to the Russian leader, was a serious step forward.

Lukashenko, in turn, called the Union State “a priority of priorities” for Belarus. He explained that the countries are actively cooperating in various areas and are aimed at further expanding union integration, as well as protecting historical and moral values.

In 2019, the Center for Spatial Analysis of International Relations IMI MGIMO conducted a large-scale survey of citizens of Belarus about their attitude towards Russia. The study showed that 57.6% of respondents chose the most acceptable “allied” relations between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus, 31.8% – “partnership”, 10.2% – “neutral”.
