In the coming weeks, the social welfare association of the Perg district will be staging brass music as the glue of society and a source of joy in life in a new concert format together with the brass music association. Under the motto “Brass music rocks old people’s homes”, the musicians from 26 brass bands will play garden concerts on seven Fridays in the seven retirement homes in the district. On each date there is a parallel concert at all locations. This brings this initiative, which is unique in Upper Austria, to 49 performances in the period from May 3rd to September 6th.

Participate in life

“There is a widespread opinion that everything around a retirement and nursing home should be as quiet as possible so as not to disturb the residents. In reality, the opposite is the case: older people want to take part in social life, with others people, experience activities or at least observe them through their windows and balconies,” explains the chairman of the Perg social welfare association, Werner Kreisl, why he approached the management of the brass band association with the request for a musical impulse for the nursing homes.

With this concern, Kreisl immediately found a sympathetic ear among the Perger music associations, says district chairman Georg Fichtinger: “We in the district management quickly agreed that we support this idea and, if possible, would like to have all the bands on board.” District bandmaster Erwin Haderer promises that his musicians would like to present the entire variety of brass music to the residents of the retirement home, from Bohemian polka to traditional local marches to rock classics: “The latter will be particularly important in our youth ensembles. That’s how we are came up with the title ‘Brass music rocks old people’s homes’.”

The dates are currently being coordinated among the individual music clubs so that from May 3rd onwards a concert can actually take place on every third Friday from 3 p.m. in every old people’s and nursing home in the Perg district.
