The final game of the OÖ Liwest Amateur Hockey Oberliga between the Danube Ducks Linz and the third team Amstettner Wölfe actually had everything a final thriller needs. Eight goals in the 60 minutes of play and the decision in a penalty shootout. 228 fans in the Linz-AG ice arena saw how the home team dominated their Lower Austrian opponents in terms of shots on goal in all three periods of the game, but struggled to convert their chances. The Ducks took the lead through Philipp Kreisel (5th), but Amstetten turned the game around in the first period because Markus Wutzel (6th) and Christof Manz (12th) took two of the ten shots at Ducks goalie Christian’s goal Gstöttenmayr was able to utilize it.
Decision in the shootout
In the second period, the home team managed to equalize to 2-2 through Dominik Trisko (23′). Less than ten minutes later, Wutzel was there again for the Amstettners and shot the Lower Austrians into the lead again. But only for about two minutes of play. Because Kreisel (34.) is once again the correct answer. 36 seconds before the second period break, Jakob Bruckner scored in the power play to give the guests a 4-3 lead. Trisko’s second strike (48′) to equalize 4:4 was the only goal in the third period, which is why the game had to be decided in a penalty shootout. And of all people, the Ducks top scorer, Martin Forstner, who had not been on the scoreboard until then, shot the Ducks to the title at the crucial moment.
“It was a varied game right from the start. And in the end the decision is made by a penalty shootout, only sport can provide such emotions,” said coach Patrick Gaffal after the game. The joy is not only huge for Black Wings striker Stefan’s cousin, but also for Steel Wings goalie coach Gernot Wegerer is part of both amateur league championship teams.
Second championship title in the premiere year
On February 25th, the Ducks were crowned winners of the OÖ Liwest Amateur Hockey Lower League with a 6-0 win in the final against the third team KIWI Voralpenkings. Walter Gritzner and the Linz ICE live stream commentator Markus Valant left their mark on the final game with two goals and two assists each.
What is happening in the other leagues in the domestic ice hockey lower house?
1. Upper Austria Liwest Ice Hockey League
EC Kapsreiter Wels has been the winner since Friday, March 1st. Coach Oleksandr Pobiedonostsev’s team prevailed 2-1 in the best-of-three final series against EC Oilers Salzburg. The series for third place has also been over since Saturday: The Steyr Panthers were able to beat the Grizzlies Linz with a spectacular 8:5 win. Curious: The game had to be played in Amstetten because the ice had already started to thaw in Steyr.
2. Upper Austria Liwest Ice Hockey League
Like the Danube Ducks Linz, the EC Kapsreiter Wels and its two teams also won in both leagues. In the second league, the Welsers under coach Florian Fingernagel won the third final game on March 3rd 3-2 after a 10-0 win in the first game of the final series against the KIWI Voralpenkings and a narrow 2-3 defeat in the away duel.
