In Gmunden yesterday, thousands gave their hearts away

Liebstatt Sunday in Gmunden

The “Hasi” who leisurely hops across the town hall square has graying hair and is wearing a hat. In intimate togetherness with “Mausi”, who has thrown himself into a dirndl dress today, the spring feelings are even more intense this Sunday. No fairytale hour in the Salzkammergut, just Liebstatt Sunday. The day when everyone wears their hearts (and therefore mostly new and old pet names) around their necks. And some already on the tongue. The gingerbread, thousands of copies of which the local confectioners have brought to Lake Traunsee, looks too tempting.
It’s not hard to guess which hearts are particularly easy to give as a gift: the classics.

But in addition to the “Schatzis” and the “Favorites”, there are also those who would fulfill Herbert Grönemeyer’s sung wish and would love to give their hearts back. It’s not so easy to stroll down the esplanade with “Graveler” on your chest. But as is well known, there is only one thing that can help against any kind of pain: a real Liebstatt heart. When the Laufen Gmunden-Engelhof factory band sets off, a little late at 10.40 a.m., and marches loudly from the church square through the old town to the town hall square, hundreds of hearts are already beating faster.

On the stage, which this year has been moved directly to the shore of Lake Traunsee, Mayor Stefan Krapf (VP) and Franz Wolfsgruber, chairman of the traditional costume association “D’Traunseer” as well as State Governor Thomas Stelzer (VP) will take the floor. Today we want to celebrate a day of togetherness, joy and love in beautiful weather in Gmunden. After all, the custom, which has existed since 1641, also has its origins in charity: Back then, influential and wealthy citizens paid their love to the poor in society with a shared meal. And it hasn’t just been clear since yesterday: Gmunden doesn’t need Valentine’s Day. Gmunden still has Liebstatt Sunday.
