»I became a zoo educator by chance«

Teresa Landskron is one of those people who would immediately subscribe to the comedian Loriot’s sentence “A life without a dog is possible, but pointless.” She would only change the word dog to animals. Because she loves all living things – from corn snakes to ball pythons to dogs and horses. She also keeps all of these animals herself. “Even as a child, I had all the animals that my mom allowed,” says the 25-year-old from Linz with a laugh.
It is therefore no coincidence that the student teacher for chemistry and biology has always been on the lookout for part-time jobs that have something to do with animals. When she was able to start at the Linz Zoo, Landskron was thrilled. Although the student was initially only employed at the cash desk, she was gradually able to do more and more guided tours of the zoo. Since the beginning of 2023, Landskron has been responsible for zoo education.
“This is a dream job for me because it is so varied and I can combine my educational training with my knowledge of animals,” enthuses Landskron. The big difference to school is that the children can experience what they say directly, which is of course more exciting than the material taught in the classroom.
The zoo educator is always particularly happy when she and her visitors come to see the crocodile Toni for a show feeding session. “The poor guy was kept in a bathtub as a cub before he was brought to the zoo. Toni now lives in a species-appropriate manner in our tropical house and even comes when the zookeepers call him,” says Landskron.
Even if it sounds unimaginable, the hard-working woman from Linz has another job in addition to her studies and the 25-hour job as a zoo educator: “I teach apprentices applied mathematics for automotive technology. I really enjoy that too.”
