To commemorate the nuclear disaster in Fukushima 13 years ago and as a reminder that nuclear energy must have no future, the Austrian association atomstopp_atomkraftfrei leben! based in Linz together with the French cooperation partner “Reaction en chaîne humaine” held a rally in front of the European Parliament in Strasbourg. 200 nuclear opponents from 59 organizations and 14 countries formed a human chain on Tuesday around 12 p.m. to draw attention to the nuclear dangers and the lobbying of the nuclear industry.

Billion-dollar lobby

In his speech, managing director of atomstopp_atomkraftfrei leben!, Herbert Stoiber, recalled the conditions in Japan after the nuclear accident in Fukushima: “Wide areas around the nuclear power plant ruins are permanently uninhabitable and Japan has no idea what to do with all the shining Waste is supposed to be created continuously and for many decades to come – the contaminated water is now being discharged into the sea. The Japanese government estimates the damage at around 200 billion dollars – independent experts speak of 500 to 700 billion – and yet it continues to do so all over the country Reconnecting the reactors that were shut down during the disaster, extending their running times and planning new reactors,” says Stoiber.

Austrian MP and leader of the European Greens, Thomas Waitz, also took part in Tuesday’s rally and said that the greenwashing of nuclear power must be decisively countered.

According to Stoiber, it is primarily up to the members of the European Parliament to put a stop to the nuclear industry and to position themselves clearly against the financially strong nuclear lobby. “Only if the promotion of nuclear energy is stopped can the expansion of renewables be achieved quickly,” says the atomstopp managing director.
