Italian mafia wants to get into the zombie drug fentanyl business

Fentanyl, which is gaining ground in Europe, is also known as a “zombie drug” where just two milligrams can be fatal. The drug, which is 50 times more powerful than heroin, has caused a high number of synthetic opioid overdose deaths in the United States. As of 2018, fentanyl and its analogues account for most overdose deaths in the United States.

Italian Health Minister Orazio Schillaci announced more controls to prevent fentanyl from getting into the hands of Italian consumers. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said a national plan was needed to prevent the spread of this drug.

The ‘Ndrangheta is widely considered the most powerful organized crime cartel in Italy, surpassing Sicily’s Cosa Nostra as it controls much of the cocaine arriving in Europe. Experts estimate that their turnover accounts for three percent of Italy’s gross domestic product, which corresponds to around 60 billion euros per year.
