Lynxes are among the species threatened with extinction, which is why there are always projects to resettle them in Upper Austria in the long term – but so far in vain (the OÖN have reported).

In the eastern area of the Northern Limestone Alps, where five lynxes currently live, the rare wild cats generally find an optimal habitat, as experts from the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna found. In any case, the ecological conditions are present there. The eastern part is the most heavily forested area of this size in Austria and has little infrastructure.
However, further releases into the wild would be absolutely necessary to support the population. Experience has shown that in order for the population to survive independently, it needs at least 20 lynxes. These would have to be genetically different so that they can reproduce.
Popular among people
Wildcats generally enjoy a high reputation among the population. This was the result of a study presented in Admont at the beginning of the week. “From a socio-economic perspective, the lynx can be seen as positive for a region,” says Ulrike Pröbstl-Haider from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna, who surveyed 1,000 people in her study.
The majority consider the lynx to be one of the most attractive animal species in the mountain area. In addition, the opinions of farmers from the Northern Limestone Alps region were explicitly sought. In this group, the lynx enjoys a neutral to good image. About two thirds see natural expansion as positive, while the majority are critical of reintroduction.
