New bus timetable for Steyr: Faster, further and in line with the ÖBB

Harmonization with the ÖBB timetable, better connections to the outskirts of the city, no trips around the world through half the city – this is how the new city bus routes can be briefly summarized. The city senate unanimously passed the package to the local council yesterday. Provided that the state also gives the green light, the new timetable can come into force in 2025.

The experts from Stadtbetriebe Steyr (SBS) took a close look at the public bus network in cities like Villach and St. Pölten, among other things, and brought the points that work well there to Steyr. They also looked at where Steyr grows and where there are white spots in the public connection. A long-standing demand of many passengers is also being fulfilled – the arrival and departure times of the city buses will in future be adjusted to those of the ÖBB.

“It is also important to me to have better connections to the town square, which will be served by more buses again,” said Mayor Markus Vogl (SP) in a broadcast.

Line 4 Tabor is being thinned out

The Staffelmayr settlement, for example, will be connected for the first time – the planned GWG project in the horticultural settlement has already been shown in the new timetable. However, line 4 Tabor is being thinned out, where passenger numbers have fallen significantly since the Tabor lift went into operation. This in turn means some relief for Steyrdorf, where the heavy buses put a lot of strain on the pavement and have to drive very close to pub gardens and passers-by.

A so-called office line is also new. “It creates a quick connection between the train station, town square, district administration, WiFi and the Reithoffer municipal office building,” reports SBS supervisory board head, city councilor Katrin Auer (SP). This line would also shorten travel times to the rapidly growing areas of Christkindl, Pyrach and Reichenschwall. The settlement on the edge of the forest should be made more accessible to the public, and there should also be a solution for the often overcrowded Resthof line 2A.

In contrast, the intervals between when a bus runs are extended during less busy times, for example on individual routes in the afternoon or on Saturdays. Together with so-called evening lines, which can cover a larger radius, this should result in a cost reduction for taxpayers of around 100,000 euros.
