A court on Thursday ordered pre-trial detention for eight men who describe themselves as prophets. They are accused, among other things, of violating child protection laws. The police in the country in southern Africa searched the area of the cult shrine on Wednesday.

The officers also came across 16 undeclared graves containing, among other things, the remains of small children. The 251 children found at the site did not have birth certificates and had not been registered in schools, a police spokesman said on Thursday. The children would now be examined by a doctor, it was said.

The investigation was triggered by a post on social networks from one of the men who has now been arrested. In it he had written that children should not receive formal education as this would lead to the failure of the rains.
