The use of the cloud contributed US.4 billion to GDP

A study at the request of Amazon Web Service revealed the positive economic impact of the use of this virtual technological tool.

The economy of Uruguay was greatly benefited in 2023 from the adoption of the public cloud technology, with some 5.4 billion dollars generated in terms of economic production; and could generate 3.9 billion dollars annually in contributions to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) until 2038.

The data arises from a study prepared by the Mexican company FTI Consulting, At the request of Amazon Web Service (AWS), one of the largest cloud service providers in the world. The research focused on the economic impact of adopting the public cloud—a computing model in which the infrastructure of the information technology (IT)such as networks, servers and storage platforms, are offered as virtual tools accessed through the Internet—in South American countries.

In that sense, Uruguay was one of the countries studied, so the results were presented to the Government Agency Electronic and Information and Knowledge Society (Agesic).

What were the results of the study?

The AWS on-demand study showed that public cloud adoption in Uruguay, both in the private sector as in the public, it had a positive impact on the national economy from the creation of approximately 132,000 jobs, the income of 5.4 billion dollars linked to the production, about 900 million dollars in terms of tax revenue and, in addition, a contribution of 3.4 billion dollars to the GDP.

Likewise, the investigation highlighted that a sustained average of 3.9 billion dollars of the GDP per year until at least 2038, taking as a reference the product of 2021, which was 58 billion dollars.

In terms of productivity, public cloud adoption would mean $1.6 billion in labor income per year, and 1,000 million annually on average from fiscal impact additional.

To measure the results, the consultancy took into account three elements: the direct effects of public cloud adoption, associated with investment what is required to provide cloud services to people; indirect effects, linked to the processes that improve cloud adoption; and the induced effects, referring to the advance of the digital transformation and the effects it causes in the improvement of connectivity, productivity and speed of processes.
