There is a lot of activity at the Design Center in Linz on Thursday morning as preparations for car spring are underway. Almost all eyes are now on Jasmin “Jasko” Sisic. He sits in a huge telescopic forklift and, with stoic calm, carefully lifts car after car onto the five-meter-high gallery in the east foyer.

“I have already lifted 28 cars, two are still missing,” says Sisic, who has worked at Messe Linz for 33 years, in an OÖN interview. When asked if he was nervous because the cars were very expensive, he said: “When I did it for the first time, I was a little nervous. But now, thanks to my experience, that’s no longer a problem.”

30 cars are lifted up

So that the 30 cars can be lifted up, part of the railing was dismantled. At the top of the parapet are two men secured with belts; they receive the vehicles. When the 30 cars have safely arrived at the top, the railing is reinstalled.

33 cars have already lined up in the smaller event hall – from the Mazda MX-5 roadster to the fully electric Ford Mustang Mach-E with a large, black roof tent.

And as soon as the cars are where they should be, the cleaning crews arrive. They polish the bodies to a high shine – and remove all traces of travel.

Exhaust fumes can hardly be smelled when maneuvering in the large exhibition hall. Which is no surprise, since a good 80 percent of the 200 exhibits already have an electrified drive. Not only do you drive quietly, but you also drive emission-free.

20 charging points for electric cars

There will be a premiere this year in the open space between the Design Center and the adjacent hotel. Keba, the Linz-based specialist for electric car charging solutions, has set up 20 temporary wallboxes together with Linz AG. There, visitors who travel to the motor show with their electric car can charge their electric car for free during the exhibition tour. Charging is possible with an output of up to 11 kW.

This year, the 17 exhibiting dealers of the “Association of Linz Automobile Dealers” and a guest company will present a total of 40 car brands – from A for Abarth and Alfa Romeo to V for Volvo and VW.

BYD and Fisker there for the first time

The Chinese brand BYD (“Build Your Dreams”) and the US brand Fisker will be represented at the Auto Spring for the first time. The SUV Fisker Ocean is built by Magna in Graz. The South Korean brand Ssangyong is celebrating a return after a break of several years – with several models.
