Already in the early morning the passers-by streamed into the inner city of Linz. Long queues formed at all the cash registers in a fashion store. The 2G proof was not checked by the sales staff. The parking lot in front of the Haid Center near Linz was also full from early on.
Also well visited is the “Varena”
The same picture presented itself in Vöcklabruck at the Varena. In front of the shops that were still closed, people waited to be admitted. One cafe was already occupied before 9 a.m., so they apparently met for breakfast before going shopping.
Few controls in PlusCity
There was also a lot of activity in Upper Austria’s largest shopping center, PlusCity. Many shops had put up the “Sale” signs when they opened. Most of the stores also included references to the requirement to wear a mask and 2G – in one case also the low-threshold notice that one should not “cough in the face” of anyone. However, there were no controls or visible security at the on-site inspection at the entrance to the center or – with a few exceptions – in the shops themselves. The guests patiently accepted queuing for a seat and registering.
Apparently, the Upper Austrians started at the beginning of the long shopping weekend, including Sunday, to get presents for Christmas Eve. The employee of a picture frame shop in Linz asked a customer on the phone not to come by until Tuesday. She reckons that the big rush will then be over and that the preparation of a frame for a picture can be discussed in peace. But the job won’t be finished by Christmas.
