This emerges from a report in the “New Yorker”, which is based on a current study. The average consumption of a household is 29.97 kilowatt hours (kWh) per day.

Alex de Vries, data scientist at the Dutch National Bank, predicts that annual electricity consumption in the AI industry could reach 85 to 134 terawatt hours by 2027. That would be half a percent of global consumption.

$700,000 per day

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is reportedly spending at least $700,000 a day to maintain operations. De Vries sees a “fundamental imbalance between this technology and ecological sustainability” in the New Yorker.

OpenAI boss Sam Altman recently explained that they need to look more at the energy requirements of the technology, as a “breakthrough” is needed to cover this. He cites fusion power plants or “radically cheaper solar power plants plus storage” as possibilities – on a scale that no one is yet planning on.
