What does a missed opportunity to win the title do to a young team? That was the question that several hundred fans asked themselves on Friday in the Linz-AG.Eisarena. The U20 of the Upper Austria Ice Hockey Academy is one win away from the title, their first attempt yesterday failed 0:3.

Like the day before, the guests from the Hungarian capital took a 2-0 lead. Barnabas Loczl scored in the first period (15th) to make it 1-0 for Ujpest. Peter Simon then increased the score to 2-0 (26th). Fears that it would be like the day before were not fulfilled. Because Dominik Stöttner scored less than two minutes later (27th) to make it 1-2.
Everything is in place for a very interesting final third. The Linzers, who recorded more shots than their opponents in the second period, pushed the Hungarians into their own third at times. But the goal didn’t work. And so it was – like the day before – an empty net goal by Kristof Polonyi (59th) that decided the game in favor of the guests.
There is still a chance for the U20 title for the Upper Austria Ice Hockey Academy: On Sunday at 6 p.m. – but away in the Ujpest district of Budapest. All good things come in threes. Maybe also for the ice hockey juniors.
