Despite being only twelve years old, Marie Schmidhofer is already a tennis ace. This week in Lienz in East Tyrol, the Linz native secured the state championship title in singles and doubles in the U12 class without losing a set. “This is her greatest success so far,” said her happy dad Christian and her coach Fabian Gunnesch.
Schmidhofer only played eight games in four games and lived up to her role as favorite. Her final opponent Zoey Zandomeneghi from Thalheim was left behind, but was still able to be happy. Because together with her friend, roommate and eternal competitor Schmidhofer, she won the U12 national doubles championship title.
On to Croatia
The 12-year-old from Linz doesn’t have much time to celebrate. After her mathematics school work today, Schmidhofer went to Croatia, where she now wants to prove herself on the international stage. She will train there and play the qualification from Sunday. This is the next logical step to further improve their game. An international tournament is now planned once a month.
Her father believes that his daughter can keep up even against stronger competition, but is curious to see how traveling and the “tough” competition will affect his daughter. In any case, we want to take things slowly.
