A young firefighter was the first to notice the oil slick in the Garstner Bach. At around 4:30 p.m. she called her comrades for help, who immediately moved out and set up the first oil barrier shortly before the mouth of the Enns. Since oil had apparently been leaking into the water for a long time and had already gotten into the fish ladder, the emergency services could no longer prevent the oil from getting into the Enns.

Therefore, the water train and the technical train of the Steyr fire department were notified to set up an oil barrier in the Enns. After consultation with the Steyr-Land district administration and an expert from the state of Upper Austria, the members of the Dietach fire department were also alerted. The exit was stopped a short time later.

The culprit is said to have already been identified.
