English should also become the language of instruction more often in schools

Among other things, the school experiments on the topic, which are currently only offered in a few institutions, will be transferred to the mainstream school system. In the future, there should also be the general possibility of bilingual teaching at elementary schools. The measure should come into force for the first grades from the 2024/25 school year and for the following grades in ascending order in the following year.

Middle schools and secondary schools should also be able to be run bilingually. The aim is to ensure that the students are supported in German and English or in the relevant subject lessons in such a way that they reach the level of a first language even in the originally weaker language. Here, too, the start is planned for the first classes in the 2024/25 school year, and at the AHS also in the fifth classes – the remaining classes will follow in ascending order in the following year.

The possibility of bilingual leadership should not only be available for the entire school, but also for individual classes. The goal has been set for each of the 31 educational regions in Austria to have at least one secondary school in which English is at least predominantly the language of instruction in individual classes.
