UTE approaches the milestone of 300 electric chargers on routes

The state company is close to meeting the goal of having a fast charger every 50 kilometers for this type of vehicles.

The National Administration of State Electrical Power Plants and Transmissions (UTE) is close to reaching the milestone of installing 300 electric chargers on national routes in Uruguay, thus fulfilling one of the management objectives of having a fast electric charger every 50 kilometers.

Within the framework of the second energy transformation, UTE’s push into the electric vehicle market has been important for a sector that, in any case, is growing by leaps and bounds in the country. In that sense, for example, the state company implemented the refund of 4,000 pesos per charger, to encourage the adoption of this type of vehicles.

Likewise, one of the objectives set by the company led by Silvia Emaldi was to achieve, during 2023, reaching 300 fast chargers for electric cars installed on national routes. Although the inconveniences generated by last year’s drought slightly extended the projected times, UTE is close to meeting the milestone, according to what the president of the entity herself told Ámbito.

According to Emaldi, throughout 2023 they were investing in an electric route with the incorporation of chargers that allow 100% of the vehicle’s charge to be completed in 20 minutes. In the coming days, the 300th charger will also be installed, fulfilling the objective of having a charging point every 50 kilometers and, thus, eliminating one of the barriers that exist when buying an electric car.

The total investment announced at the end of 2022 to achieve this ambitious project was $500,000, and involved the installation of 23 new chargers in different parts of the country: eleven in the southern area, four on the coast and eight in the axis of the Route 5.

Uruguay, leader in sales of electric cars in Latin America

Uruguay, like Costa Rica, are the countries with the highest penetration in the sale of electric cars; the country is accompanied by government measures that support the market for these vehicles, a decision that is reflected in an increase of 80.92% in 2023 compared to the previous year.

The Automotive Trade Association (ACAU) published official data on vehicle sales and, specifically, on electric vehicles and, according to the published data, the sales managed to increase by 80.92% during 2023 compared to 2022. According to ACAU, “the electric vehicles are establishing themselves in the market with great momentum, accompanying the global trend”.

In this sense, the general manager of ACAU, Ignacio Pazhe assured Informativo Uruguay that like Costa Ricathe country achieved one of the highest penetrations in the sale of electric vehicles in the entire Latin America.

“They are small countries that managed to be proactive and efficient in terms of infrastructure. In Uruguay The most distant points in the territory are 570 km away and today there are already 285 chargers installed per UTE. In a few days the projected 300 will be completed and one charger will be available every 50 kilometers on all national routes,” Paz explained.
