They got lost while descending due to fog and wind, as the Styria State Police Department announced on Sunday. The Mürzzuschlag mountain rescue service brought the already hypothermic people back to the valley after a police helicopter operation was not possible due to the weather.
Wrong turn taken
The three men arrived at the Karl-Ludwig-Haus shortly after 2 p.m. Despite the increasingly deteriorating weather, the group decided to descend. On the way into the valley, the men took a wrong turn and ended up in rugged and sloping terrain. They then made an emergency call.
The planned police helicopter could not be used because of the bad weather. Ultimately, 17 mountain rescuers and an alpine police officer set out on foot to search. The alpinists were found hypothermic and severely weakened and were escorted back into the valley after receiving first aid.
