The Ministry of Finance collected 2.081 billion euros in the form of tobacco tax in 2023. In 2022 the income was about the same. In Austria, among other things, sales of 3.3 billion euros were achieved with cigarettes, 173 million euros with cigarette tobacco and 73 million euros with cigars. There are 4684 tobacconists. 1218 people with disabilities run such specialist shops.

The tobacco monopoly has been in effect in Austria for 240 years and goes back to an idea of ​​Emperor Joseph II: He wanted to ensure an income for war invalids and widows through the award. To this day, concessions are awarded to people with disabilities.
