Omikron: Government tightened entry requirements

Self-isolation can only be avoided with a 72-hour PCR test or evidence of a booster vaccination. Anyone who is neither freshly tested nor already had their third sting must be in quarantine. However, entry is still possible. Home quarantine is only ended if a PCR test has been carried out after entry and a negative result has been confirmed. In this case, registration through a pre-travel clearance is also mandatory.

Pregnant women and people who cannot be vaccinated for health reasons are excluded from the requirements for 2G detection and the additional PCR test or booster vaccination. The reason for the exception must be proven by a medical certificate. There are also special rules for children.

“These stricter entry regulations bring with them great challenges, especially for people who travel abroad over the Christmas holidays. However, they are necessary at this point in time to counter the spread of Omikron in Austria,” said Health Minister Wolfgang Mückstein (Greens).

Children are allowed to enter with a ninja pass

School-age children are allowed to enter with a ninja pass or similar test certificates. The rules do not affect children under the age of twelve either. However, like your adult companion, you must be in quarantine and register for pre-travel clearance.

Austrians, EU and EEA citizens and people living in Austria must also present a valid vaccination certificate or a certificate of recovery when entering the country. Otherwise, a ten-day quarantine must be started. The possibility of early free testing is available from the fifth day. In this case, too, registration via pre-travel clearance is mandatory.

There is an additional exception rule for commuters. The usual 3G rule remains in place here.

In addition to the stricter entry regulations, the states of Angola, Zambia and Malawi are also added to the list of virus variant areas. There is a landing ban at all Austrian airports for direct flights from these countries.
