In the morning the two of them took the gondola lift from Ramsau am Dachstein/Styria to the Hunerkogel on the Dachstein Südwandbahn. From there they rode their splitboards along the ski tour markings over the Dachstein plateau to Krippenstein in Obertraun. The two of them were familiar with the freeride offer at Krippenstein from a previous vacation about two months ago.
The couple therefore wanted to descend into the valley via the “Angeralm” option this time too. However, since there was much less snow that day than in January, the descent for the Finns was different than usual. Because the departure tracks were difficult to see, the two of them overlooked the exit from the variant and drove too far into the terrain. Due to the lack of snow, the two had to take off their snowboards and try to get towards the valley on foot.
However, in the increasingly steep terrain, in the area of a waterfall, the athletes had to realize that further descent was no longer possible and the return journey on foot would take a lot of time and energy. That’s why they called the emergency number of the Krippenstein cable car on their cell phones at around 3:30 p.m.
The emergency was forwarded to the Gmunden Alpine Police and the Obertraun Mountain Rescue Service. The air police helicopter, Libelle Sierra, was called in to help. The crew was able to pick up the two well-equipped winter sports enthusiasts using rescue rope and fly them into the valley uninjured.
