The brand new mayor of Cannelloni, Marcelo Metediera, He maintained that the commune will no longer wait for news from the Ministry of Transportation and Public Works (MTOP) regarding the train-tram designed to be a solution to traffic in the metropolitan area of Uruguay, between the Canarian department and Montevideo. “We do not wait any longer to have clear definitions,” stated the leader.
After the controversy that arose around the project due to its announcement by the MTOP Without prior consultation with the municipalities involved, it has been a long time since there has been more talk from the public and government sphere about the train-tram that would link, in theory, the metropolitan area. One of the reasons was the beginning of the analysis for the construction of the country’s first highway, an initiative with much more of a “milestone” aspect, but which was always diagrammed as parallel to the “Tram Train.”
Metediera spoke about this delay that has been going on for almost a year on Radio Monte Carlo, and stated that the news of the ambitious initiative had generated a halt in mayor’s projects aimed at improving traffic conditions and the quality of transport service; but with the passage of time, and without further developments, it was decided to resume his own actions.
“We were thinking, working on an execution on Giannattasio because it lacks paint, traffic engineering, some signage and the synchronization of the traffic lights, which obeys other times,” said the Canarian mayor.
In that sense, the Municipality of cannelloni had advanced in two tenders: one for the maintenance of the four radars that belong to the communal jurisdiction; and another to update traffic light management.
“We had been working on that when the news of the Coast Trainthat paralyzes us because if a project is going to be carried out with the proposed characteristics, it does not seem reasonable to carry out work and infrastructure that later has to be changed,” Metediera explained.
But, “given that no progress has been made with the Coastal Train project”, the mayor’s office resumed its own initiatives regarding both the Giannattasio Avenue as in the analysis necessary to alleviate traffic in the commune, with alternatives such as a new lane or the inclusion of a bus dock.
A project for 2025
The tram train that would link the town of El Pinar (Canelones) with Old City (Montevideo) Construction would begin in 2025, as stated in November of last year by the construction companies, which are advancing with the studies of the project, which they titled “Tram Train.”
The consortium of the three construction companies Saceem, Stadler and Stiler have already presented a pre-feasibility study to MTOP with which the government portfolio agreed, however, they suggested carrying out other new studies on the subject.
At that time, Milton Torres, from the Stiller company, pointed out that “the idea is that the layout of the line coexists with the existing traffic,” and that on Avenida Italia “the natural thing would be for it to go through the central flowerbed.” “These final definitions will arise from the meetings held with the Municipality of Montevideo and with the Municipality of cannelloni“We are thinking about 26 stops in total from El Pinar to Ciudad Vieja,” he said.
For its part, Alejandro Ruibaldirector of Saceem, added that “this type of system has priority, it stops at stops, but then it does not stop at traffic lights, what stops is the rest” and that for this reason “all traffic must be rearranged to the priority of the public transport, which is the one that should have priority”.
