“The future belongs to public transport,” says Green Party club chairman Helge Langer. Therefore, traveling by bus and tram must be as attractive as possible, especially for children and young people, so that they can get on regularly as adults.
At the local council meeting next Thursday, he wants to launch a free travel model for the younger generation in Linz based on the example of Vienna. In the federal capital, children and young people from all over Austria can use the Wien Linien public transport services free of charge on Sundays, public holidays and during the Vienna school holidays.
Financial relief
“This offer ensures that children from families who have difficulty affording a youth network card, for example, have access to public transport at any time outside of school hours,” says Langer.
He also sees a tourist benefit and effect in the regulation, which should apply to children and young people from all over Austria in Linz and Vienna: “If parents don’t have to buy a public transport ticket for their children during holiday periods and thereby save money, that could be a be an additional incentive for families to spend their next vacation in our city.”
