According to the Matzelsdorf fire department, last week’s pellet delivery was probably to blame. The moisture in the pellets may have been too high, which led to a chemical reaction and the formation of carbon monoxide (CO). Fortunately, the carbon monoxide detector in the storage room went off quickly, whereupon the family informed the fire department. Measurements by the fire department confirmed the increased CO value and the building was evacuated. The parents and their two children of kindergarten and elementary school age were initially accommodated elsewhere.

Carbon monoxide detector essential
Such a reaction can quickly lead to life-threatening poisoning. The gas has no smell and cannot be detected with the naked eye. In this case, the carbon monoxide detector averted the worst – according to the fire department, one is “essential”.

No acute danger
The emergency services examined all four family members and found slightly elevated CO levels in the blood – but it was not acute. Contrary to initial assumptions, it is not necessary to remove the pellets from the storage room. A ventilation system is to be installed on Monday to dry the pellets and reduce the CO concentration. The family can then return to their home.
