Fischlham residents establish small energy communities

Joachim Seiringer and Werner Achleitner are helping to shape the energy transition.

In Upper Austria there are already more than 200 renewable energy communities (EEG) that jointly generate and exchange electricity, mostly electricity from photovoltaic systems. “There are already many energy communities, but we differ in that we are setting up several small, local units”says Werner Achleitner, who is a member of the environmental committee of the municipality of Fischlham. “This means we can take full advantage of the cost advantages, and everyone knows everyone and administration is much more manageable”says Achleitner. The principle also applies to energy “buy locally”.

In June 2023, he founded a local EEG together with Joachim Seiringer in Hafeld, a district of Fischlham. There are now 15 households (consumers and feeders) that are supplied by the same transformer. The network operator charges 60 percent less network fees. The main advantage of such a community is that the tariff is determined by the members of the necessary sponsoring association. This brings more independence from price fluctuations on the energy market. According to the initiators, the energy price is also significantly more lucrative than that of the classic market providers. The two operators have founded another local energy community in the center of Fischlham, which will also be available to private households. There are already interested parties.

There are no plans to establish a regional EEG (in the area of the Edt substation). The savings on network fees would be significantly lower.
