President Luis Lacalle Pou decided to appeal the decision of the Prosecutor’s Office to file the case due to irregularities in the construction of the Antel Arena, and informed the president of the state company, Annabela Suburú, to advance in the request for re-examination of the complaint, with the objective of exhausting all avenues at the judicial level. Uruguay.
To the president Lacalle Pou did not leave it in accordance with the decision of the prosecutor of Economic Crimes Alejandro Machado, when he decided to file the case of Antel Arena for not finding crimes in the construction of the stadium. For him, some issues remained unclarified in the process.
For this reason, and as reported Ambit On February 22, the president contacted Suburú, who put the legal team of Antel to analyze the ruling in question, with the intention of finding a way to open new instances of investigation in the case.
Now, and according to media reports, the executive decision has been made: after analyzing the legal report prepared by the lawyer Gustavo Bordes —who was also in charge from the state company in the case of Antel Arena—, Lacalle Pou contacted the president of the telecommunications company again so that the board of directors could request the Prosecutor’s Office re-examination of the complaint.
The report used as the basis for the determination, among other things, considered two possible scenarios. On the one hand, the acceptance of Prosecutor Machado’s opinion and the fact of the existence of “administrative sloppiness” but no crime surrounding the investment and construction process of the Antel Arena, in charge of the mayor of Montevideo directed by Carolina Cosse; and, on the other, the possibility of requesting the reexamination of the entire complaint by another prosecutor who may lean towards one criminal accusation.
This last alternative, which was finally chosen, also implies a political message of other characteristics, and aims to exhaust all avenues, as this medium had anticipated, which was the intention in Executive Tower.
The final deadline to request the reexamination expires on April 1, while the board of directors meets tomorrow Antel to analyze the situation and present the request to the Prosecutor’s Office.
A “political operation” against Cosse
On February 22, when Machado’s ruling regarding the filing of the case by the Antel Arena, the mayor of Montevideo and presidential candidate for the Frente Amplio, Carolina Cosse, He highlighted the decision of the Economic Crimes Prosecutor and assured that the complaint was “a political operation” against him.
Cosse stressed that in the initial report, which appears in the file, “the expected cost of the entire project is explained in detail” and warned that the case was part of “systematic attacks” against her, recalling the attempted impeachment since the Departmental Board of Montevideo. Likewise, he recalled that “from a part of the Antel board of directors a pseudo audit was generated that was presented in court to generate an entire criminal case against me.” The comment pointed towards the then head of the state company, Gabriel Gurmendezalthough without expressly naming it.
Finally, echoing the court ruling, the candidate expressed: “What I want here is to always reaffirm my perseverance in the republican institutions. No one can deny that Justice took its time and finally filed the case today. “.
