A new home regulation has been in effect in nursing homes in Upper Austria since last year. Together with the Association of Towns and Municipalities, the state of Upper Austria developed the “Skilled Workforce Strategy”, which aims to attract more people to the nursing profession and relieve the burden on staff.
The balance after 15 months is positive: compared to 2023, 396 more people are working in the nursing profession. The number of empty beds due to a lack of staff was reduced by 106. According to State Councilor for Social Affairs Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer (VP), the newly introduced professional group of support workers is responsible for this. “People can enter the profession without training and are trained in everyday work,” says Hattmannsdorfer. The number of people in training for the nursing sector has increased by 170 people.
Hattmannsdorfer sees another “lever” in the employment rate: the majority, around 68 percent, work part-time. In employee discussions, people want to suggest increasing hours. The mayor of Linz and president of the association of cities, Klaus Luger (SP), also sees “enormous potential” in the part-time reduction. According to community association president Christian Mader, despite the success, it is still necessary to “constantly evaluate and adapt the measures.
