Young people in particular should not spend too much time in front of flickering media – PCs, televisions, smartphones, tablets. Because of this, children and young people are increasingly becoming short-sighted. “The problem is that myopia is often only recognized late,” says the expert. “The symptoms accompanying myopia first become noticeable: lack of concentration, loss of performance or headaches. It often takes months before the real cause is found,” says the ophthalmologist. A lot could have gone wrong academically during this period. “Therefore, if you have problems at school and the symptoms mentioned above, you should always take eye health into account. Never underestimate the importance of a healthy eye,” says Niederberger. As an adult, you should have a check-up every year or every two years from the age of 40 at the latest. After all, there are eye diseases that, like glaucoma, develop very slowly and are often only recognized when the disease is already well advanced. “Then more than 90 percent of the visual performance has been lost,” says the doctor.

Almost half of those suffering from glaucoma do not even know that they have it. “If this is detected early, you can achieve excellent treatment results,” said the specialist. The eyes can also be protected preventively: through a healthy lifestyle, the visual organ remains intact for longer.

The eyes are also affected if other illnesses are present – such as diabetes. It therefore makes sense to eat a diet that is as low in fat and sugar as possible and to incorporate a lot of exercise into your everyday life – according to the doctor, if possible in the great outdoors, where your eyes can rest again after digital stress in our fast-moving world.
