The best astrophotographers in the world meet at the Ars Electronica Center

It started with a dream and a bold idea. In spring 2009, the Central European Deepsky Imaging Conference CEDIC took place for the first time at the Ars Electronica Center Linz. Astrophotographers from Upper Austria led by Christoph Kaltseis from Herzogsdorf realized their idea of ​​an international event that focuses on the exchange of information between astrophotographers and people with a passion for astronomy. The CEDIC is now one of the world’s most important and respected conferences.

“It’s just fun,” says Mühlviertler Christoph Kaltseis, explaining his passion for photography. He not only walks on earthly paths, but also in the vastness of space. From Friday to Sunday you can immerse yourself in strange worlds at the “Central European Deepsky Imaging Conference – CEDIC” at the Ars Electronica Center in Linz. Kaltseis, together with his Upper Austrian colleagues, is the organizer of this prestigious event for astrophotographers from all over the world.

Through his telescope, Kaltseis tracks well-known celestial bodies such as the Moon or Saturn as well as galaxies hidden deep in the black of the cosmic night.

Opening freely accessible

The CEDIC weekend starts on Friday afternoon with an informal meeting of the visitors who have already arrived. There is the opportunity to visit the impressive sales stands of the CEDIC partners in the foyer of the AEC. Exhibitors from Europe and overseas show their latest products. The official opening will then take place in the evening with a fascinating screening of images and films in Deep Space. The opening is open to the public and free of charge. This is entirely in the spirit of CEDIC to get as many people as possible excited about astronomy and astrophotography.

Lectures and workshops

Saturday and Sunday offer a wealth of high-quality lectures and workshops. The contributions on topics such as recording technology and image editing are very diverse. But content such as observatory remote control, TWAN photography (The World at Night), time-lapse recordings and lectures from research are also not neglected.

The highlight of the opening evening is a spectacular performance in the AEC’s Deep Space. High-resolution images measuring 16 x 9 meters of galaxies and gas nebulae, taken by the world’s best astrophotographers, will take visitors into the vastness of space and amaze them.

Highlights from research including exciting background information are also presented, such as comparisons between the current space telescope missions “WEBB Space Telescope” and “Euclid”.
