A study from Vorarlberg on mental health shows: Parents of children with special needs are more psychologically stressed and need more support for their mental health. Because: The psychological state of parents also affects their children.
“Parents of children with special needs are under greater psychological stress,” says Susanne Bauer, medical director of aks children’s services. 7.9 percent of these parents meet the criteria for depression (general population: 4.7 percent), and 7.3 percent suffer from an anxiety disorder.
In addition, a connection was found between parents’ depression and anxiety symptoms and their children’s psychological symptoms and behavior: 17 percent of the children of depressed parents showed increased levels of aggressive behavior, 9 percent had increased media consumption, and 15 percent had an increased proportion of sleep problems. Similar numbers were found among parents with anxiety symptoms. The child and adolescent psychiatrist therefore sees a need for action to offer parents quick and uncomplicated support.
