They are the icing on the cake. The numerous local derbies that take place almost every week in the lower house of football. One of them is the neighboring duel between St. Willibald and Enzenkirchen in the 2nd class West North. The two communities are closely linked. Not surprisingly, there are numerous acquaintances and friendships among the players and officials. However, these will rest for 90 minutes on Sunday (3:30 p.m.). Especially since Enzenkirchen has an important say in the fight for promotion after a remarkably strong autumn and a successful start to the second half of the season (5-0 against Peuerbach Juniors). “We definitely want to stay at the forefront. It will become clear over the course of the spring whether there will be enough to get to the top”says Enzenkirchen coach Hubert Hamedinger, who never tires of keeping the ball flat despite his team’s surprising run of success.
After eleventh place last season, Enzenkirchen is currently more than satisfied with fourth place, four points behind leader Eggerding. The same applies to the most recent derby result against St. Willibald: Enzenkirchen won the last two games. “Of course we’re playing for a win again against our local rivals”says Hamedinger. “What’s important is that we perform as well and consistently as ever. It’s a special game, with more spectators than usual.”
Sebastian Lehner, sporting director in St. Willibald, is expecting around 400 to 500 football fans on Sunday. “Things are going well at Enzenkirchen this year and we got off to a good start with the 2-1 win against St. Aegidi. We are therefore hoping for a full house”says Lehner. The success mentioned makes the Willibalder sports director confident for the tasks ahead. “We shared the points too often in the fall. In the spring we want to get more three points in order to gain more meters in the table.” The penultimate player in the derby wants to take the first step forward. “We want to break the little series that Enzenkirchen started right away”Lehner gives the direction of march. “A derby is a derby. We’re looking forward to it.”
“Be there”
The anticipation of the duel against the local rivals is also great in the upper Innviertel. The Ostermiething Juniors will welcome St. Radegund at home on Saturday (3:30 p.m.) for the top game in the 2nd Class Southwest. “A groundbreaking game”, as Ostermiething trainer Moritz Huber says. The Upper Austrian league team’s second team is on a roll. They were able to win all of the last six league games. This means they have moved up to second place, just three points behind league leaders Geretsberg. “We are enjoying the run at the moment. In order to be promoted as a 1b team, a lot of things have to come together, especially since you are not allowed to compete in a possible relegation”says Huber. In principle, however, the focus in the second team would be on the development of the young players. “Our goal is to raise as many of our own boys as possible into the combat team squad. Every minute of play in the adult area is good for them”says Huber.
The respect for the Ostermiethinger youngsters is certainly given by their neighbor from St. Radegund – who is currently in fourth place. “But we are positive and will do everything we can to survive in the derby”says section leader Stefan Peterlechner. After a change in the squad two years ago, the sporting arrow in St. Radegund continues to point upwards. With a complete success on Saturday the gap in the table could be closed. “We said in the winter that we had given ourselves a chance with the good first half of the season, which we want to take advantage of in the spring. If the opportunity arises, we want to be there”says Peterlechner.
