The man had just been doing survey work when, for reasons unknown, he was hit by a transport locomotive that was delivering material to the tunnel boring machine. For him any help came too late.
The emergency doctor who was alerted could only determine the death of the worker from Upper Bavaria. The 36-meter-long train was driven by a 51-year-old Hungarian, the police said on Friday morning. This drove the locomotive in a southerly direction. It transported materials and workers to the work areas in the main tunnel towards Brenner.
The Innsbruck public prosecutor’s office ordered a judicial autopsy of the body. After the surveys have been completed, reports will be submitted to the public prosecutor’s office, the responsible security authority and the labor inspectorate, it said.
A large contingent of rescue, fire brigade and law enforcement personnel were on site. The workers on the H41 Sillschlucht-Pfons construction site were assisted by a crisis intervention team, according to the Brenner base tunnel company BBT SE, which expressed its condolences to the family and relatives of the deceased.
