Signa: WKStA is investigating serious fraud in capital procurement

The economic and corruption public prosecutor’s office in Austria has also received numerous reports surrounding the Signa Group’s insolvency. Their content is currently being checked. An investigation has now been initiated in one case: As the authorities announced, it is a case of serious fraud.

A public prosecutor’s team consisting of several senior public prosecutors and economic experts is investigating together with a special commission (SOKO) of the Federal Criminal Police Office (BK).

Independently of the numerous reports, two investigations relating to Signa were already pending from other contexts, involving a voluntary disclosure under the Financial Crimes Act due to the failure to pay the capital gains tax appropriately for a dividend distribution.

In addition, allegations of bribery or corruption and abuse of official authority are being investigated. The basis is statements from the ex-Secretary General of the Ministry of Finance, Thomas Schmid, in which he incriminated Signa founder Rene Benko.
