The 62-year-old, who suffers from life-threatening kidney disease, received the genetically modified organ a week ago. The operation lasted four hours, the patient is recovering well and will probably be discharged soon.
Experts see this as a success, but emphasize that it could still be a while before standard transplants of animal organs into humans can take place. “It makes sense to continue working on the topic. But I am skeptical as to whether we will be transplanting pig kidneys on a large scale next year,” said Christian Hagl, an expert in xenotransplantation (animal tissue for humans) and director of cardiac surgery at the Munich University Hospital.
