Russia sent Tu-22MZ to Belarus for joint border patrols

Russia has sent long-range Tu-22MZ bombers to Belarus to jointly patrol the Belarusian state border. This was announced on Saturday, December 18, by the Belarusian Defense Ministry.

“Patrolling is carried out as part of the strategic bombers Tu-22M3 of the Russian Aerospace Forces, accompanied by a mixed tactical group of multifunctional fighters SU-30SM of Belarus and Russia,” the ministry said in a statement posted on Telegram.

Earlier that day, Major General Vladimir Archakov, Deputy State Secretary of the Security Council of Belarus, said that the United States Air Force planes are conducting electronic reconnaissance throughout the entire depth of the territory of Belarus.

According to him, the American contingent near the Belarusian-Polish border totals about 4 thousand people. At the same time, the agreement of August 15, 2020 on expanded cooperation in the field of defense between the United States and Poland provides for the possibility of increasing the contingent by another 1,000 people, as well as improving the existing military infrastructure for the deployment of about 20 thousand American troops.

Prior to that, on November 29, the head of the Belarusian Defense Ministry Viktor Khrenin said that the situation near the western and southern borders of Belarus was heating up. Minsk is forced to plan retaliatory measures. In addition, Khrenin noted that NATO countries are building up the potential of the armed forces near the borders of Belarus: deploying military formations, purchasing modern weapons.

On the same day, Khrenin also announced that Belarus would conduct new military exercises with the participation of Russia. They will be aimed at working out the protection of the southern borders of the country. At the same time, the head of the Belarusian Defense Ministry noted that Moscow and Minsk are not planning to conduct large-scale exercises like the “West”.
