Criticism came from the governor of Minas Gerais, Romeu Zema, who considered that Uruguay “subsidy” to dairy industry. Given these statements, Mattos pointed out that they are “unfortunate statements” and highlighted that it is “a competitive productive system” that provides Brazil.

The head of MGAP maintained that Minas Gerais is a state that stands out for its dairy production and pointed out that Zema, at a meeting of producers, “afflicted by competitiveness problems internal and profitability of small producers, demanded the suspension of imports from countries that subsidize, among which it included Uruguay”.
“It is a false statement, it has no basis and we reject it at all,” said the leader, while reviewing: “We have repeatedly had meetings to dismiss this type of excuse, which often ends in slowing down and increase in price of imports at the border. This reason has been put forward for many years, but it has never been technically proven.”
Finally, he extended an invitation to the governor and his team to the country. “Let them come to know a competitive productive system and see that Uruguay It is a transparent country and an important supplier of milk that sometimes manifests itself poorly in Brazil”, he concluded.
It is not the first friction between the MGAP and Brazilian producers
It is worth remembering that Mattos traveled to Brazil last year to hold a meeting with his counterpart Carlos Fávaro, within the framework of new Brazilian regulations that imposed restrictions on dairy imports.
“The presence and incidence of Uruguay in the Brazilian market should not be pointed out due to the situation that Brazilian producers are experiencing,” Mattos said on that occasion, where he expressed his concern about the delays at border crossings.
