The experts from the test magazine “Konsument” carefully examined, for example, building blocks, plug-in games, pull-along and pushing toys. The result: More than a third of the toys tested cannot be recommended. They have too high pollutant levels in paint, plywood or textiles.
Toys tested for 220 harmful substances
The pollutant testing looked for pesticides, colorants, flame retardants, formaldehyde, plasticizers and heavy metals. The toys were tested for 220 substances in more than 1,000 tests. There was at least one hit for every product. There is no danger with eight toys because of the small quantities; they are harmless.
The test results in detail:
Five products not recommended
However, five products did not pass the experts’ safety test. The magnetic fishing game from Goula releases more formaldehyde than permitted. However, it remains below the Toy Safety Directive limit and was rated “less satisfactory”. Activity blocks from PlanToys, Pull-along dog Pepe from Hape, Squirrel Play wooden building blocks from Smyths Toys and Sliding figure Frog Prince by Walter failed the pollutant test and therefore in the safety category with “unsatisfactory”.
In the activity blocks from PlanToys, the blue textile of the purple wooden cube contains a dye that can release a carcinogenic substance. The paints also contain a chemical that harms our environment.
Walter’s Frog Prince sliding figure should never have been sold in the first place. Because problematic plasticizers were found in the black plastic ring of their wheels in quantities that are prohibited under EU law.
A substance that is suspected of causing cancer was found in the paint of pull-along dog Pepe. The red paint on Squirrel Play’s building blocks contains a substance that is suspected of causing cancer.
All products passed “direct hazard” tests
The direct dangers include risks such as choking hazards due to small parts that can be swallowed, strangulation hazards, flammability and acoustic safety – for example if a toy is too loud. More than 200 stress tests have been carried out on these hazards. The reassuring result: There is nothing wrong with any of the 13 tested products in terms of direct dangers.
