It should be nothing less than a new model district of Linz: The expectations for the project on the site of the former Hiller barracks in Ebelsberg and the adjacent summer grounds are high.
Now, with the groundbreaking ceremony, the official starting signal has been given for the redesign of the 32-hectare area with renovations and new buildings; around 3,000 apartments are to be built there in the coming years. The district is being built jointly by the WSF private foundation of the XXXLutz Group and the non-profit building associations GIWOG, Neue Heimat OÖ and WAG on the basis of a cooperative planning process.

To start with, in the first construction phase – as previously announced – three existing buildings on the former barracks area will be revitalized under the project name “Ebelsdorf”. In a second construction phase, six more existing houses will be renovated. The listed barracks buildings from the 1940s will be converted into subsidized rental apartments. Two further existing buildings are intended for commercial and social purposes – offices and childcare are planned.
As reported, the site is also in the draw for the new Linz primary care center, which plans to start operations in summer 2025 (probably in containers).
The first 141 rental apartments will be ready for occupancy from 2026. Once the revitalization of the nine barracks buildings has been completed, around 422 subsidized rental apartments will be available. The revitalization of all existing houses is scheduled to be completed by 2029.
