Following the extensive statements made by key witness Oliver Bellenhaus, former chief accountant Stephan von Erffa is also considering admitting allegations of crime, several people familiar with the matter told the Reuters news agency on Monday.
Erffa’s defense, the public prosecutor’s office and the Munich regional court discussed a possible deal on Friday, the insiders said. But so far there is no agreement. According to the Code of Criminal Procedure, those involved can agree that in return for a confession, a defendant will receive a promise from the court about the extent of the punishment. The “Handelsblatt” first reported on the matter. The court confirmed that a so-called legal discussion had taken place. The defense and prosecution declined to comment.
Wirecard collapsed in June 2020 when it was discovered that 1.9 billion euros were missing from escrow accounts in Asia. Former CEO Markus Braun sits in the dock next to Erffa and Bellenhaus. The public prosecutor sees the trio as a gang that committed accounting falsification, market manipulation, breach of trust and fraud. The indictment is based, among other things, on information from Bellenhaus, who was Wirecard’s representative in Dubai. Braun and Erffa have rejected the allegations.
