State Governor Thomas Stelzer recently honored Steyr’s honorary chief fire inspector Erich Mekina with the state’s medal of merit for his decades of commitment to the Steyr volunteer fire department. Mekina has made a name for himself through his dedication and commitment to fire service. His work is known beyond the country’s borders. His achievements in handling the fire brigade were particularly highlighted, which brought him several top placings in competitions and even an entry in the “Guinness Book of Records”. Also mentioned was a remarkable effort when he was able to save the life of an injured swimmer in the Steyr indoor swimming pool.
In his laudatory speech, Stelzer emphasized the importance of people like Erich Mekina for the common good: “Erich Mekina embodies important values of our society: commitment, willingness to make sacrifices and the tireless will to help others in emergencies. His commitment is a shining example for all of us and deserves the highest recognition.”
Mekina herself was modest: “It has always been close to my heart to help people in need. This award is a great honor for me, but it also goes to all my comrades who do their best every day to make our community safer.”
