President Recep Tayyip Erdogan hopes to recapture the metropolis of Istanbul for his ruling AKP party. To do this, he uses all the means at his disposal.
The head of state takes the race in his hometown of Istanbul personally: He began his career here as mayor 30 years ago. When Istanbul fell to the opposition five years ago, it was a humiliation for the president. As an economic metropolis that provides half of Turkey’s tax revenue, Istanbul is also important as a moneymaker for the ruling party. An election result that gives the impression that Erdogan can be defeated could therefore lead to a rift in Erdogan’s coalition. On the other hand, if Istanbul goes back to the AKP, there is a risk of a further slide into authoritarianism. Erdogan could feel inspired and test limits – for example, changing the constitution in order to secure another term in office, which the current constitution prohibits. Polls predict a close race.
