Last September I was in Syria with representatives of the aid organization “Initiative Christian Orient” (ICO). The situation in the country shocked me a lot: all the ruins, the great suffering of the population, the lack of prospects in view of the warlike conditions and international sanctions. We visited projects supported by the ICO.
We were also at the closing party of a summer camp for the children of the town of Masskaneh, which was run by the local parish together with the ICO. For these children, the summer camp was the only opportunity for a bit of variety in the dreary everyday life of Syria. Playful, sporting and creative activities are intended to bring joy to the children, who have all experienced bad things. “We love life!” the children and young people’s companions told us several times. And I couldn’t help but think of Easter. “We love life”: This sentence says everything about Easter. Jesus’ death is not the end, on the contrary: life triumphs, nothing is impossible for God, he raised Jesus from the dead.
