With two mountain companions, the 50-year-old climbed from the Wiesberghaus towards the Simonyhütte on Friday around 4 p.m. The group was on touring skis and was adequately equipped. Your chosen route is in the open ski area, but is largely groomed and is heavily used and walked on.
“Abbreviation” selected
In the area of the Keferfeldsteig, near Ochsenkogel, the Czech left his friends and the ski track because, according to his own statements, he wanted to take a shortcut. After he still hadn’t arrived at the Simonyhütte around 6:45 p.m., his two companions became worried and called the police via the Euroemergency number. At this point, a foehn storm had set in and there were gusts of around 100 km/h.

Mountain rescuers followed the right trail
A mountain rescuer who happened to be there set off on foot from the Simonyhütte. The landlords of the Simonyhütte and the Wiesberghaus went in search of the missing person with their skidoos.
However, images that were supposed to put the rescuers on the right track misled them, as the 50-year-old had long since left these points and climbed towards Wildkarkogel. Despite strong gusts of wind and darkness, the mountain rescuer managed to locate a trail and follow it.
Exhausted but unhurt
At around 8:15 p.m. the missing man was discovered exhausted below the Hoher Wildkarkogel. After a short descent back to the trail, he was finally brought back to the Simonyhütte with the SkiDoo.
