They assure that it is more profitable to bring fish from Argentina

The sector chambers assure that they are “on the verge of collapse” and demand that the government take action.

The crisis in fishing industry has worsened in recent weeks Uruguay and from the sector they assure that “it is more profitable to bring frozen fish from Argentina”, at moments where the cameras claim to be “on the verge of collapse.”

Thus, although the Ministry of Labor and Social Security (MTSS) guaranteed special unemployment insurance for workers in the sector after an agreement with the Maritime Inter-Union of Uruguay, Criticism of high costs is multiplying.

Carlos Olivera, executive director of Novabarca, He assured in dialogue with Radio Carve that the situation in the sector “is complex” and regretted that “the majority of the ships are stopped and there is a decrease in the fishing activity.”

Olivera, also promoter of the Uruguayan Fisheries Ecosystem, He highlighted that “hake fishing has been affected” and warned: “It has become more profitable to bring frozen fish from Argentina.”

When analyzing the problems of the fishing industry, he assessed that there is a lack of favorable regulation that encourages investment and development, which is why he called for “modernizing regulations” and exploring “new opportunities in the exploitation of marine genetic resources.”

The fishing chambers transfer responsibility to the government

Both the Chamber of Fisheries Industries of Uruguay (ICPU) as the Chamber of Fishing Shipowners of Uruguay (CAPU) released a joint statement a few days ago where they considered that the government is “irresponsible” for not addressing the claims in an extreme situation.

“Not taking actions or continuing to delay them is also a decision, with consequences that the Executive power will have to assume. The political system must decide if it wants there to be fishing”, they warned.

In the letter they stated that 90% of the fishing fleet has been paralyzed for three months and there are almost 3,000 people directly affected by the current scenario. “If nothing changes, they probably will not be able to work in fishing again,” they concluded.
