SV Ried’s 0-1 home defeat against GAK was overshadowed by massive fan riots on Friday evening. The mood between the two camps was already heated before and during the game. Around 5,000 Ried fans came, compared to almost 1,000 away guests. After fans from both groups masked up and ignited pyrotechnics, a GAK fan was injured shortly before the end of the game when he fell from the railing into the stadium interior.

One arrest and numerous reports
After the game, around 10:30 p.m., things escalated. Outside the stadium, at the entrance to the guest sector, the mutual provocations continued to escalate, so that firecrackers, bottles and stones flew. Police officers, who had already separated the fans, stood in the middle. They were also thrown at and two of them were even injured.
The use of pepper spray was necessary to stop the violent fans. According to the police, an “uninvolved person but with behavioral problems” was briefly arrested. Numerous more advertisements are likely to follow. The investigation was still ongoing, it was said on Saturday evening.
80 GAK high-risk fans
The Graz fans traveled in several buses from Styria, but also from other, partly international, locations. Since there were around 80 so-called “high-risk fans” among them, the executive branch had – as usual – taken high security precautions. 200 police officers were deployed in and around the stadium to keep the opponents under control. Ried and GAK fans were escorted into and out of the stadium separately.
