Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation assessed the EU mediation between Armenia and Azerbaijan

The European Union was not involved in resolving the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh, but now it would like to join it. Permanent Representative of Russia to the EU Vladimir Chizhov stated this in an interview to Izvestia, noting that Russia is not opposed to the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan to communicate at various platforms.

“The European Union, of course, wants to join, but there is a saying, known for centuries, that victory has many fathers, and defeat is always an orphan. The success of our Russian mediation mission in this conflict evokes different feelings among the European Union and other international players, and there are those who want to join this. Some succeed in this to one degree or another, others to a lesser extent. We believe that another opportunity for direct contact between the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia is, in general, not bad if it is beneficial to the political settlement and expansion of the field of contacts between these two friendly countries, ”the diplomat said.

The meeting of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev took place on December 14 on the sidelines of the Eastern Partnership summit in Brussels. According to the head of Azerbaijan, he sees “a sincere desire of Russia and the European Union to promote the normalization of relations between the two countries.”

The situation in Nagorno-Karabakh escalated on September 27, 2020, when active hostilities began in the region. On November 9, a trilateral statement was signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. It made it possible to achieve a complete cessation of hostilities in this territory.

“The situation is reminiscent of our not so distant Soviet past”
