Left-wing coalition candidate Gabriel Boric leads the second round of the Chilean presidential election after counting nearly 90% of the vote. This is evidenced by the data of the electoral service of the republic on Sunday, December 19.
At the moment, votes have been counted from 92.12% of polling stations (43 193 out of 46 887). Preliminary results: on the scales of Boric – 55.73% of the votes, his opponent Jose Antonio Casta – 44.27%.
If won, Boric, 35, would become the youngest Chilean president in history. In 2011, he was one of the leaders of massive student protests against the current system of paid higher education. If he wins the elections, he intends to introduce a tax on wealth, collect royalties from the mining industry (copper is Chile’s main export). Borich advocates the legalization of abortion and the transition to free education.
José Antonio Cast, 55, is an ultra-conservative politician who speaks out for the military regime of dictator Augusto Pinochet (1915–2006). The creator of the Republican Party proposes to cut taxes, expand the powers of law enforcement and repeal the law that allows abortion in cases of rape, a threat to the mother’s life or the failure of the fetus. He has already run for president as an independent candidate in the 2017 elections.
The president is directly elected for a four-year term.
Regional and municipal elections were held on November 21 in Venezuela, during which the future heads of local executive power and members of legislative assemblies are to be determined. More than 70 thousand candidates apply for elective positions. About 300 foreign experts arrived in the country to observe the elections, including a delegation from the Central Election Commission of Russia (CEC of the Russian Federation).
